This Denver suburb became the temporary home to thousands of residents in the summer of 2011 after hurricane Irene derailed a train in Nebraska. As the Amtrak California Zephyr route became temporarily shut down for a number of days, visitors as well as local residents were stuck indefinitely in Colorado. Some residents returned home in Aurora, Colorado, opened their garage doors, and made the drive down to New Mexico where additional rail lines were working. Others tried booking flights, but the majority remained where they were, hoping the trains would be back on schedule sooner rather than later. Though many people exercised caution before leaving and contacted garage door services in Aurora to be sure their cars were safe while they were away, in the end there really was no need.
